Recent reports from various media sources suggest a significant rise in the number of separation cases, generally termed as khula, in Lahore. The increase has been remarkable so far this year, reflecting broader trends in the region. Pakistan has seen its divorce rate jump by about 35% over the last five years. In Lahore now, courts have more than 12,000 separation cases. Between 41 to 45, the courts deal with that many new cases every single day. These alarming rates majorly contribute to this through different situations of domestic violence, refusal of the basic necessities for some of the family members, among other various social issues. These statistics bring to light a growing concern about marital stability in the region and call for a deeper look into the underlying causes behind such a dramatic increase in separations.
