Human Rights-Sheraz Khan- Attorney

It’s always comes in my mind that “Why the Rights of Women and Children Matter

In today’s world, the conversation around human rights is more important than ever. Human rights are not privileges given by governments or societies; they are basic rights inherent to every human being. Among all groups, women and children often face the greatest challenges in enjoying these rights due to social, cultural and economic inequalities.

What Are Human Rights?

Human rights are the fundamental rights and freedoms that every person is entitled to, regardless of gender, age, religion, or background. These include the right to life, equality, education, health, freedom from discrimination and protection under the law. Internationally, these rights are recognized through instruments such as the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR). However, recognition alone is not enough. Awareness and implementation are essential, especially when it comes to women and children, who are more vulnerable to abuse, neglect and discrimination.

Women’s Rights: A Matter of Dignity and Equality

Women’s rights are an integral part of human rights. Every woman has the right to live with dignity, equality and security. Yet, many women around the world continue to face violence, unequal opportunities and social barriers.

Equality Before the Law

Women have the right to equal treatment before the law. This means equal access to education, employment, justice and participation in public life. Gender-based discrimination not only violates human rights but also hinders social and economic progress.

Freedom from Violence

No woman should live in fear. The right to life and security includes protection from domestic violence, harassment, trafficking and harmful traditional practices. Creating safe spaces for women is a responsibility shared by families, communities and the state.

Right to Education and Health

Education empowers women to make informed choices and contribute meaningfully to society. Alongside education, access to healthcare especially maternal and reproductive health services is a fundamental right that directly impacts families and future generations.

Economic Empowerment

Women have the right to work, earn equal pay for equal work, own property, and participate in economic activities. Economic independence strengthens women’s voices and reduces vulnerability to exploitation.
